houseofstrangeI have been rethinking the Arcane Dragon stuff and I feel that the magic statue stuff doesn't work. Cute little sideline of thought, but I think it will remain that.
No, I think the Arcane Metal Dragons are the more prosaic idea that the Three Sisters can shapeshift into dragons. It is not a talent they use often - used so little it is a legend.
Maybe Elená uses her dragon form more often than her sisters, but Elená is also the one who shapeshifts the most, having forms in multiple races. She may even have unicorn and Phoenix forms, giving her the trifecta of the Great Races.
Edit 25/4/18:Though I am now more inclined to say that if she has a unicorn-like form, it is more likely to be Ki-rin, since she is a frequent wandering warrior. Maybe she has both, but uses Ki-rin more because it's more battle-capable. The unicorn form she may keep for diplomacy./Edit.
