The Nightlands usually names four races as their iconic "Most Powerful" - the Dragons, the Unicorns, the Phoenixes, and the Quendár, but there is one other that is often forgotten, at least on land. In the Nightseas however, everyone knows about the Leviathan and respects it's influence across all the waters.

No one actually know what the Leviathan is, only that it is so huge it compares in size to whole kingdoms, and that it resides in the Endórfásë - the Equatorial Gulf - seemingly dormant, though felt far and wide.

The Leviathan is hugely telepathic and it's ability to touch minds spans as far as the sea's water does. All the sea races, the Merfolk, Oár Kessír, Sea Dragons, and even the Isilmaquendár are aware of the Leviathan in the back of their minds, linking all the seas together.

The Leviathan seems to exist as something of a guardian over the seas, giving a bridge for the intelligent sea races to understand one another. It does not directly involved itself in much of sea life but there are rare occasions where it's anger is riled and it sends out it's avatars, the Krakens, to attack and punish those who do harm to the seas.

The Krakens are giant, powerful squids who do the will of the Leviathan, but it is unknown if they are intelligent independent of the Leviathan's control as they are only ever seen when the Leviathan is displeased. They are believed to be about as common as dragons, and seemingly live for a similar span as the largest of the Great Wyrms - around 5000 years.

The Leviathan itself seems to be immortal and the only one of it's kind in existence.

Discussions between land-dwellers and Sea-Folk have come to conclude that the role of the Leviathan in sea society is akin to that of the Living Stone to Dwarves, and the Arcane to Quendár. The Isilmaquendár have come to call the Leviathan "The Arcane's Son of the Sea". The Leviathan does not seem to object to this description.
